Architectural library. Dioscuri Temple in Agrigento
2013
This paper presents the synthesis of research about the ICT solution for cultural heritage through the innovative technology of representation and survey. One objective was to identify a method of processing data for knowledge, dissemination and preservation of the asset. Historical analysis, surveying, photogrammetry and laser scanner, the processing of survey data and modelling are all focused to the same final purpose. The methodology developed for this application framework becomes adoptable in General for Cultural Property, which become in turn the protagonists of 3D WebGIS.
Gustavo Pulitzer Finali. Interpretazioni grafiche di una Villa sul mare, 1930.
2017
This study concerns the graphic reading of an unbuilt project by Gustavo Pulitzer Finali, a ‘Villa by the sea’, presented at the Triennial in Mon…
Exploiting 3D Modelling and Life Cycle Assessment to Improve the Sustainability of Pavement Management
2020
Today road agencies worldwide face difficult decisions for construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of their road infrastructure as they try to balance limited budgets. This is further complicated rising environmental concerns over equipment and techniques used for these practices. This has led agencies to consider alternative approaches for smarter and sustainable pavement asset management systems. This paper considers the use of a low-cost 3D image modelling distress identification and classification proposal for data acquisition and analysis. To establish its environmental friendliness, a case study in Palermo, Italy, is considered wherein a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) exercise is do…
3D survey and modelling of the main portico of the Cathedral of Monreale
2018
3D survey and modelling of Cultural Heritage allow to store a great deal of 3D data that can be managed for different purposes. 3D models can be used for documentation, restoration and knowledge of historic architectures and monuments. In this work, a 3D survey of the main portico of the Cathedral of Monreale (Palermo, Italy) was carried out. The paper presents the data acquisition process and the 3D modelling phase. The work is aimed to reconstruct a 3D model that could be used also to set up an HBIM (Heritage or Historic Building Information Modelling) of the main portico. The result of this study could be considered as a first test to implement an HBIM platform for the whole monumental c…
Inside The Glaciers Project: Laser Scanning Of The Grotta Del Gelo (Mount Etna, Italy)
2017
As part of activities of the “Inside the Glaciers” project, managed by an Italian team of speleologists and geologists with the purpose of studying several ice-caves in Europe and South America, a research campaign was recently carried out in Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). This volcano is the highest active in Europe and hosts more than 200 caves including Grotta del Gelo (Ice Cave) which is located on the Northern flank of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 2040 m a.s.l. This cave was formed during the Etna’s long and most destructive eruption dated from 1614 to 1624 and is one of the most famous because it hosts a small glacier, maybe the southernmost of the Northern hemisphere. Aim of this …
Un progetto di Archeologia Virtuale a Soknopaiou Nesos nella regione del Fayyum: stato dell’arte e prospettive di ricerca
2016
This work illustrates the first results of the Project of Virtual Archaeology which is now developed by a team of topographer from Salento University (Lecce) together with the équipe of Archaeological Mission of Centro di Studi Papirologici at Soknopaiou Nesos (Fayyum, Egypt). Article also focuses on the main aims of this project : a topographical survey and virtual reconstruction of monuments, digital analysis of data, representation of urban and suburban landscape and their evolution, achievement of a special platform for using the data both on-line and off-line. Keywords : Virtual Archaeology, Soknopaiou Nesos, Archaeological Mission.
The Augmented Reality as an Instrument for the Representation/Visualization of Architecture
2019
This paper deals with issues related to the representation/visualization of architecture and its narration through the augmented reality tools. Specifically, the possible scenarios and the different strategies to address the problems related to the application of AR platforms in the field of cultural heritage are presented. Some case studies will be analyzed and the use of augmented reality applied to museums and archaeological sites including the Museum of the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine in Paris, the Regional Archaeological Museum A. Salinas in Palermo and the archaeological site of Selinunte. Thanks to these exemplary cases, the potential and critical aspects of the latest AR…
Identification of an LPS-Induced Chemo-Attractive Peptide from Ciona robusta
2020
Background: Previously published work has demonstrated that the LPS injection of Ciona robusta leads to the overexpression of a truncated form of an immune-related mRNA (C8short) by means of Ciona robusta (CR) alternative polyadenylation (APA) (CR-APA). Methods: The 3D structure of the C8short-derived Ciona robusta chemo-attractive peptide (CrCP) was evaluated by homology modeling. The biological activity of the CrCP was studied in vitro using a primary human dermal cell line (HuDe). Real-Time PCR was used to investigate the expression levels of genes involved in cell motility. THE VIRTUALIZATION OF CH FOR HISTORICAL RECONSTRUCTION: THE AR FRUITION OF THE FOUNTAIN OF ST. GEORGE SQUARE IN VALLETTA (MALTA)
2020
Abstract. Improving accessibility to Cultural Heritage (CH) is an increasingly urgent challenge today. It is not only a matter of physical inaccessibility but also temporal, considering that part of CH now lost. Fortunately, the most modern technological tools are helping to break down both space and time barriers. In facts, recent advances in representation, 3D modelling and survey methodologies opened new scenarios for valorization and conservation of CH. In particular, the improvement of quality in resolution and sensor sensitivity of cameras allowed to achieve the right level of 3D reconstruction through digital photogrammetry procedures. In the same field, terrestrial laser scanners (T…
RPAS AND TLS TECNIQUES FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY: THE CASE STUDY OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF ERACLEA MINOA (ITALY)
2018
Abstract. Digital documentation and 3D modelling of archaeological sites are important for understanding, definition and recognition of the values of the sites and of the archaeological finds. The most part of archaeological sites are outdoor location, but a cover to preserve the ruins protects often parts of the sites. The possibility to acquire data with different techniques and merge them by using a single reference system allows creating multi-parties models in which 3D representations of the individual objects can be inserted. The paper presents the results of a recent study carried out by Geomatics Laboratory of University of Palermo for the digital documentation and 3D modelling of E…
